I have an older brother so it was a little easier for us. One of the best films that he introduced me to was 1986's NIGHT OF THE CREEPS. For those of you who are not familiar with this one, NIGHT OF THE CREEPS was more of a comedy / horror film. and wasn't your typical over the top, gore, blood and guts type. The film pays homage to the B Movie genre with zombies, alien invasion, a pyscho axe murder, and brain eating slugs. Throw in a tough rogue cop, a bit of off color humor and you've got NIGHT OF THE CREEPS.
As the movie begins, you are not sure if aliens are invading, Michael Myers is on the loose or this is a Night of the Living Dead remake. It all ties together believe it or not. Remember this is an 80's B Movie / Horror/ Teenage Comedy / Rogue Cop/....slah, slash, slash. That is one of the things that I love most about this movie. The film's creators realize what this film is and don't take it too serious but don't go over board with the comedy either. They managed to maintain a nice balance of humor, horror and action. Most films that try this go too far with slap stick humor, characters that are overly nerdy or small skinny guys playing the part of the tough guy. Also, the FX are pretty well done. Hand made make-up FX without the damn CGI.
This movie did not do well in theatres but has had quite the cult following. I'm a sucker for films that are described this way. The films that 'normal' people don't like are usually the best in my book. If you are the same, then check this out and you probably won't be disappointed.
In addition to the film's "Corman University" being named for horror/sci-fi director/producer Roger Corman, several last names of the main characters are based on other horror/sci-fi directors:
- Jason Lively as Chris Romero, named after George A. Romero
- Jill Whitlow as Cynthia Cronenberg, named after David Cronenberg
- Tom Atkins as Ray Cameron, named after James Cameron
- Steve Marshall as James Carpenter "J.C." Hooper, named after John Carpenter and Tobe Hooper
- Wally Taylor as Dt. Landis, named after John Landis
- Bruce Solomon as Sgt. Raimi, named after Sam Raimi
- Robert Kino as Mr. Miner, named after Steve Miner
